| A 16-year-old female presented because she was disturbed about the unsightly appearance of a “lump” on her right eye. She also has a deformed ear on that side. Visual acuity is OD 20/200 and OS 20/20. Except for these findings, she appears healthy. |

a -- shave off the dermoid
The best thing to do for this girl is to carefully shave off the dermoid. It is impossible to achieve totally clear cornea beneath, but with healing the cornea looks much better than with the large mass present. The reduced vision in this eye is most likely due to amblyopia from the anisometropia from induced astigmatism in the involved eye. The post operative appearance is shown in the pictures below.

With the dermoid shaved off the corneal surface is essentially smooth. The underlying cloudiness will remain to some extent but the appearance will be improved. These pictures were obtained the day after surgery.
