| This 34-year-old man had an acoustic neuroma removed surgically 18 months earlier. He is doing well except for weakness of the right side of his face. He has difficulty closing his eyelids on the right side and has weakness of his lower facial muscles. |

a -- peripheral
Since the paralysis affects both the upper and lower face muscles the lesion is of peripheral origin. Central lesions affect only the lower facial muscles.

This condition occurring idiopathically is called: |

c -- Bell palsy
When this condition occurs idiopathically it is called Bell palsy. This condition is usually self limiting. |
