A 24-year-old female reports severe discomfort while wearing contact lenses.  On examination of the eye, no epithelial defect or anterior chamber reaction is found.  Upon everting the lids, the above clinical picture is observed. 

This most likely represents:   

a. herpes simplex virus (HSV)
b. Acanthamoeba
c. giant papillary conjuctivitis (GPC)
d.  neoplasia
