Why doesn't Cyber-Sight use email for sending telemedicine consultations to the mentor instead of requiring doctors to log in? |
|
Cyber-Sight is a web-based program available anywhere, anytime with internet access. It has several advantages over simple email messages:
- It provides a standardized format for sending clinical information.
- It provides a standardized format for clinical photos which is especially an advantage when viewing patients in the nine diagnostic positions for strabismus.
- It provides an archive of patient records; this allows doctors to go back and review previous cases and is especially advantageous when sending follow-up information such as postop pictures, etc. that does not get lost or deleted as in email messages.
- It provides a measure of ORBIS impact in its programs worldwide; to date we have had more than 3,000 consultation cases sent through the program which could not be credited to the efforts of our volunteers through email contact.
- It provides a database of difficult patient cases for research; for example, we have collected 172 cases of Duane syndrome to date from patients of different nationalities all over the world; more cases than any busy clinic could ever accumulate in 40 years.
- It provides a database of difficult patient cases for use as educational material on the website in the Question of the Week, Clinical Challenges, etc. that can be accessed as a learning and reference source by doctors worldwide.
- This program started with email and picture attachments in 1998. The present web-based program was developed to be a significant improvement.
